There is a fine line between preppy and tacky. A bauble necklace is cute with a neutral outfit, but pair it with a bright pink blazer and navy polka dot skirt? Thats too much, try to pick one part of your outfit to be the “statement” piece.
In the picture below there is too much going on, its hard to look at for long with all the bright colors everywhere. This outfit is borderline tacky.

But as you can see here, there is one main color and everything else is fairly neutral. It looks classier and less tacky.
